متن کاملDefining Neighborhood, Analysis of Two Different Approaches: Expert-oriented Approach of Theorists and Perceptual Approach of Residents
The different offered definitions of “Neighborhood Unit” in various approaches and viewpoints by different specialized views, on the one hand; and excessive attention to expert-oriented and reduced viewpoints as well as neglecting residents’ perception of the neighborhood on the other hand necessitate providing a complete and exact definition of neighborhood which can cover all approaches a...
متن کاملPerception of Place-of-Articulation Distinctions: Common Representation for Vowels and Consonants
We look for a common perceptual representation of place-of-articulation distinctions between stop consonants and those between closed vowels. This representation can be either acoustic or articulatory in nature but not both acousticarticulatory because the acoustic consequences of front to back articulatory changes are inverted for stops and vowels. Identification data show that the perceptual ...
متن کاملA perceptually - driven account of onset - sensitive stress 1
This paper explores onset-sensitive stress from a typological, phonetic and phonological perspective. A phonetic study of three onset-sensitive stress systems suggests a close match between onset weight distinctions and a phonetic measure of perceptual energy, such that phonological weight criteria are the phonetically most effective ones. Perceptual considerations also offer an explanation for...
متن کاملMultimodal Integration A Biological View
We present a novel methodology for building highly integrated multimodal systems. Our approach is motivated by current cognitive and behavioral theories of sensory perception in animals and humans. We argue that perceptual integration in multimodal systems needs to happen at the lowest levels of the individual perceptual processes. Rather than treating each modality as a separately processed, i...
